Former Mayor Jack E. Kirksey dies at 97

Former Mayor Jack E. Kirksey died Oct. 13 at the age of 97, @cityoflivonia posted. During his 16 years as mayor, 1996-2003 and 2008-2015, Kirksey initiated the funding for and led construction of the Livonia Community Recreation Center, established the Fallen Heroes Memorial at Nehasil Park, led construction of the new 16th District Court and helped the city establish an economic corridor along Haggerty Road, the city posted.

The recreation center was named in his honor in 2016, and he and his wife, Patt, were chosen for the Livonia First Citizen Award the same year. “Mayor Kirksey always led with humor. That was his secret sauce,” Mayor Maureen Miller Brosnan said in the post. Patt Kirksey died five years ago; Kirksey had been living in an assisted living facility in Northville. No services are planned at this time, the city said.
