SMART plans for expansion into new communities after countywide vote passes - The Detroit News
The Detroit News — 9/4/2026
Following the approval of a countywide transit millage in Wayne County, SMART plans to expand its bus services to better connect the region. The measure is expected to generate at least $570 million over the next decade to fund infrastructure and growth. SMART proposes adding eight new routes and five extensions, including a return of service to Hamtramck and increased frequency on the Ford Road route. These improvements, which include the addition of Saturday service, will be phased in over a three-year period through 2029. The expansion aims to address previous system disjointedness and attract workers and businesses to the area. This growth follows a 25% increase in ridership across the system over the past year.
