City warns residents of scammers posing as Livonia officials

The City of Livonia is warning residents that scammers are impersonating city departments, commissions and employees by phone, email, text and social media, and that the messages can look convincing. The city says residents who are unsure whether a call or message is legitimate should not use any phone number given in the message itself, and should instead verify it against the directory at Livonia.gov/Directory. Officials also advised against sharing personal information or payment with an unverified caller, and said suspicious contacts should be reported to the relevant city department.

DPW to run citywide sweep for storm-damaged limbs and brush

Beginning early next week, the Livonia Department of Public Works will run a citywide, one-time chipper sweep to collect brush and tree limbs downed by recent storms, warning the process will move slowly given the volume of debris. Only branches longer than four feet qualify for chipper pickup and must be stacked with cut ends facing the street; stumps, logs, vines and roots are not accepted. Smaller brush, under four feet and 50 pounds, can go out with regular trash pickup in cans, paper compost bags or tied bundles, and residents can drop off wood waste free at the Wood Waste Disposal Facility on Glendale Avenue east of Farmington Road. SMART plans bus expansion into new communities after Wayne County transit vote

SMART is proposing eight new bus routes and five extensions of existing routes across Wayne County after voters approved a countywide transit millage in August expected to generate at least $570 million over the next decade. Agency spokesman Chris Moyer said a new Route 500 will restore SMART service to Hamtramck along the Mound Road corridor, while the Ford Road 250 route will shift from hourly to every 30 minutes; Saturday service returns for the first time since cuts in 2011. The changes phase in over roughly three years, with the next wave beginning in spring 2027. SMART CEO Tiffany Gunter said ridership across the system's 45 fixed routes has grown 25% over the past year.

Storms and an EF2 tornado leave hundreds of thousands without power

Severe storms swept Southeast Michigan Thursday, Sept. 3, spawning an EF2 tornado that tore through Detroit's east side and a smaller EF0 tornado in Lincoln Park, and knocking out power to more than 350,000 utility customers regionwide. DTE Energy reported more than 241,000 of its 2 million customers still without service by mid-afternoon Friday, down from 255,345 that morning, and said it expected to restore 65% of affected customers by the end of Friday, 90% by Saturday and the rest by Sunday; Consumers Energy reported about 5,700 customers still out Friday afternoon, down from roughly 23,000 at the storms' peak. DTE said roughly 3,400 employees, including more than 1,000 field crews from outside Michigan, were working restoration. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel warned residents heading into the holiday weekend to watch for post-storm scams, including unlicensed contractors and people posing as utility workers demanding upfront payment.

Boys soccer plays at home across the board: Churchill against South Lyon East, Stevenson against Walled Lake Northern and Franklin against South Lyon, all 7 p.m. Volleyball hosts too — Franklin against Lakeland and Churchill against Milford, both 6:30 p.m. Clarenceville hosts Clawson for boys soccer at 6 p.m. Stevenson High School holds an Open House for families from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The Commission on Aging meets at 5:30 p.m. at 32001 Five Mile Road. The Zoning Board of Appeals meeting listed for Tuesday is marked canceled. JV and freshman matchups in soccer, volleyball and tennis fill out the rest of the day across all four schools.

Stevenson volleyball hosts South Lyon Wednesday, varsity at 6:30 p.m.

Thursday: Stevenson hosts Walled Lake Central for varsity football, 7 p.m. Boys soccer also plays Thursday — Franklin against Stevenson and Churchill against Milford, both home at 7 p.m. (the feed lists Franklin's game as both a Franklin home game and a Stevenson away game against Franklin at the same field and time — not resolved here). The Traffic Commission meets at 7:30 p.m. at 33000 Civic Center Drive.

Friday, September 11 – Saturday, September 12

Churchill hosts Lakeland for varsity football at 7 p.m. Friday, and Clarenceville travels to Melvindale, 6 p.m. Trinity House Theatre hosts the September Song Sisters at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday: Franklin hosts Farmington for varsity football, 7 p.m. Clarenceville hosts Whitmore Lake for volleyball at 5:30 p.m. Three car shows run Saturday — the 3rd Annual Mt. Hope Classic Car Show on Schoolcraft Road, a Charity Car Show on Purlingbrook Street, and a Classic Car Show at St. Priscilla — not resolved into one here.
